2Sementara Hanas dan Kayafas merupakan imam besar, firman Allah datang kepada Yohanes anak kepada Zakharia di padang gurun.
3Dan dia datang ke seluruh daerah Yordan, sambil mengkhutbahkan pembaptisan pertaubatan untuk pengampunan dosa-dosa;
4Seperti yang tertulis dalam kitab kata-kata Yesaya, nabi itu, yang berkata, Suara seorang yang berseru-seru di padang gurun, Persiapkanlah kalian jalan bagi Tuhan, luruskanlah jalan baginya.
5Setiap lembah akan ditimbun, dan setiap gunung dan bukit akan direndahkan; dan yang bengkok akan diluruskan, dan jalan-jalan yang berlekuk akan diratakan;
6Dan semua daging akan melihat keselamatan Allah.
7Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8Maka hasilkanlah buah yang layak untuk pertaubatan, dan jangan ingin mula berkata di kalangan diri kalian bahawa, Kami ada Abraham sebagai bapa: sebab aku berkata kepada kalian, Bahawa Allah mampu dengan batu-batu ini membangkitkan anak-anak kepada Abraham.
9And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
10Dan orang ramai itu bertanya kepada dia dengan berkata, Maka apakah yang harus kami perbuat?
11Dia berjawab dan berkata kepada mereka, Dia yang ada dua jubah, biarlah dia memberi kepada dia yang tidak ada; dan dia yang ada makanan, biarlah dia melakukan seperti itu juga.
12Selepas itu tampillah juga pemungut-pemungut cukai untuk dibaptis, dan berkata kepada dia, Guru, apakah yang harus kami perbuat?
13Dan dia berkata kepada mereka, Janganlah menuntut lebih daripada apa yang telah ditentukan bagimu.
14Dan askar-askar juga bertanya kepada dia dengan berkata, Apakah yang harus kami perbuat? Dan dia berkata kepada mereka, Janganlah melakukan kekerasan kepada sesiapa pun, dan jangan menuduh sesiapa pun dengan palsu; dan berpuas-hatilah dengan upahmu.
15Dan sementara rakyat berada dalam keadaan penantian, dan semua orang merenung-renung dalam hati mereka tentang Yohanes, sama ada dia Kristus ataupun tidak;
16John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
17Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
18And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
19But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,
20Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.
21Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
22And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
